| It begins with a blade of grass. A very specific type of grass known as Tonkin Bamboo to be exact. Tonkin cane is the best in the world for building fly-rods, and Nonnemacher Fly Rods use only the best of the best. For each commission, he draws from an inventory of over 2000 hand-picked culms selected for optimum power fiber content and aged for a minimum of five years. The features of each fly-rod are tailored to the preferences of the owner. Whether you favor 6' to 9', traditional slow or fast action similar to that of graphite, or anything in between, these and other attributes are crafted to order.
Jerry A. Nonnemacher has been an avid fly fisherman since the age of ten. The Pennsylvania native restored antique cane rods and completed graphite ones before learning the art of hand-making cane fly-rods in 2001. Jerry’s son Ben learned fly-fishing at an early age. With a passion for woodworking and knowledge of equipment, he has helped to modernize parts of the manufacturing process without compromising any aspect of the quality of a split cane fly rod.
